Create A Backup

...

To create a Roshal ARchive, or .RAR archive, you'll need to install a RAR application.

A RAR archive can be created as a single file, or it can be split into multiple parts. Often, a single file .RAR archive is acceptable, just as you might create a .ZIP or .SIT archive.
However, it is beneficial to split a .RAR archive into multiple parts if the archive size will be over 200 MB.

Create A RAR

  1. Run your RAR application and Point the application to the folder that holds the files to be archived: the ISO, or Bin & Cue, or ISO & Cue, whatever.
  2. Shift-Select all of the items. In WinRAR, click Add. As in, Add to Archive.
  3. Under the General tab choose Split To Volumes and choose the 98,078k - ZIP-100 setting, than click OK.

Q - Why would I need to create a torrent file for a backup that I possess?
A - Insurance companies often advise policy owners to keep sensitive documents at an off-site location, such as a safe deposit box. A great way to protect your digital data is to do the same, by storing your files on a protected remote server.
A torrent is simply a small file that you can store in a flash drive or e-mail to yourself as an attachment which you can use to access your remote data.

To create and utilize torrent files, files with the .TORRENT file extension, you will need a BitTorrent application. Some popular BitTorrent applications are:

Create A Torrent

  1. Create a folder in your torrent download directory and name it according to it's intended contents.
  2. Place all of the .RAR files and any other related assets such as preview images, text files, etc. in this folder.
  3. Run your torrent application and choose File/Create New Torrent. You will be able to target a single file or a directory. In this case you want to point the application to the directory folder you just created, so the torrent will include all of the folder's contents.
You will be prompted to include comments as to the contents of the torrent. Do so.
You will also be prompted to include Trackers or Announce URLs. Trackers are beacons that literally announce the torrent to torrent search sites, such as:
    ThePirateBay
    http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org/announce
    http://open.tracker.thepiratebay.org:80/announce
    http://www.torrent-downloads.to:2710/announce
This allows a listing of the torrent on their servers. This is not necessary for a personal backup.
  4. Save the .TORRENT file into the same folder that holds all of the goodies.

Now, as long as your computer has an internet connection, is running your BitTorrent application, and is seeding the torrent, you can access your backup from any remote location.
